Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. emphasized the importance of collaboration among researchers, industry leaders, technology generators, entrepreneurs, and policymakers to effectively translate scientific discoveries into impactful applications.
Speaking during the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development’s (PCHRD) 43rd anniversary celebration in Pasay City, Solidum stated, “Turning research into products and services that make a difference is a shared responsibility.” He highlighted that research utilization and commercialization are vital in ensuring that scientific and medical breakthroughs become practical solutions that positively affect communities.
Solidum stressed that support systems are crucial in overcoming challenges such as limited resources, regulatory hurdles, and difficulties in connecting research outputs with industry needs. He posed an important question to the audience: “Is it merely about producing research outputs or volumes of publications, or is it about ensuring that the knowledge we generate leads to real-world solutions that meet our people’s needs?”
The DOST Secretary commended the PCHRD for its 43 years of dedication to improving lives through research and development (R&D). He added that the commercialization of health-related R&D could significantly enhance healthcare systems and contribute to the nation’s economic growth. Solidum foresees a future where locally developed vaccines, diagnostic tools, and therapeutic devices become readily available, setting benchmarks in the global health landscape.
He urged the audience to continue supporting researchers, particularly in navigating the challenges of market entry, so that the fruits of their labor can reach every Filipino. “I invite everyone here to look forward to a time when every Filipino benefits from the power of health R&D,” Solidum said.
The PCHRD’s 43rd anniversary celebration carried the theme, “Building a Healthier and Wealthier Future through Advancing Research Utilization for Greater Impact,” reflecting the agency’s ongoing commitment to translating scientific discoveries into practical, real-world solutions that improve human well-being and address societal challenges.
