Davao City marked a major milestone in tourism last year, logging over 1.8 million tourist arrivals—a significant leap from the 1.2 million visitors in 2023. The record-breaking numbers were attributed to vibrant city-wide events such as the Araw ng Dabaw, Duaw Dabaw, the iconic Kadayawan Festival, and the festive Pasko Fiesta, according to Jennifer Romero, head of the City Tourism Operations Office (CTTO).
During the I-Speak media forum, Romero expressed optimism about surpassing 2.5 million visitors in 2025. “We’ve stabilized the city’s events, and we’re already releasing dates early so tourists can plan their trips and book flights ahead of time,” she said.
The Kadayawan Festival drew the highest number of visitors in August with 190,068 attendees, while December followed closely with 178,555. The city’s official tally only includes visitors staying in accredited accommodations, leaving out those who stayed with family, friends, or in unaccredited establishments.
Looking ahead, Romero highlighted initiatives such as enhancing MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions) incentives to attract more events and conventions. This includes offering airport welcome services, reception staff, and performers to assist large group arrivals.
In a bid to strengthen air connectivity, Davao City recently added direct flights to key destinations such as Siargao, Caticlan, Clark, and Puerto Princesa. Talks with airline companies are ongoing to secure additional international flights, boosting accessibility for global travelers.
Romero also emphasized the importance of Dabawenyos supporting local events, particularly the prestigious Kadayawan Festival, and revealed plans to promote emerging destinations through an updated Davao City Local Tourism Development Plan. “We don’t want to change what’s working, but we need to reinvent and highlight new destinations,” she explained.
With the city’s commitment to sustainable tourism, vibrant festivities, and enhanced connectivity, Davao City is poised to reach new heights in 2025. Stay tuned for an even more exciting year ahead!
