39 Major Churches in Davao to Receive Enhanced Security for Holy Week

As the Holy Week approaches, the Public Safety and Security Office (PSSO) has ramped up security measures across 39 major churches in Davao City, as well as smaller churches in rural areas. This initiative is part of the city’s Oplan Holy Week, ensuring the safety and protection of residents and visitors during one of the most significant times of the year for religious observance.

Security Deployment for Holy Week

PSSO Head Angel Sumagaysay shared the details of the city’s comprehensive security plan during the I-Speak Media Forum on Thursday. The operation will see the deployment of over 3,000 personnel from various local agencies to secure not just churches, but also tourist destinations, transportation terminals, and other key public spaces.

The security cluster involves the Davao City Police Office (DCPO), Civil Security Unit (CSU), City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), Ancillary Services Unit (ASU), City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO), and City Health Office (CHO). These agencies are working together to ensure smooth operations throughout the busy Holy Week period.

Holy Week Events and Large Crowds

The Archdiocese of Davao has outlined a series of events for the faithful, including Palm Sunday on April 13, as well as a Recollection and Confession event from April 14 to 16, providing Dabawenyos an opportunity for spiritual reflection and reconciliation. Other key events include:

  • Eucharistic Adoration on April 17
  • Station of the Cross on April 18
  • Easter Vigil on April 19
  • Easter Sunday on April 20

These events are expected to attract large crowds, especially in major churches, which is why enhanced security measures are being put in place.

Public Cooperation and Vigilance

Sumagaysay also urged Dabawenyos to be proactive in supporting the security measures by cooperating with personnel on the ground and maintaining vigilance during all activities. The heightened security measures are intended to provide peace of mind and ensure that the Holy Week festivities are celebrated safely.

With the security efforts in full swing, the city is prepared to handle the crowds and activities associated with the Holy Week celebrations, allowing Dabawenyos and visitors alike to focus on their spiritual journey.
